The Case of the Butt Grazer

So, I will let my official statement to my vice principal tell the story. Just know that names have been removed (so that I wont get fired).

Official Statement

I walk around the classroom to help students and monitor progress. Because of the closeness of the tables and chairs, sometimes a student will accidentally brush past me and graze my leg or butt.

Student A
, however, has proactively tried to brush past my butt on an almost daily basis.

I noticed the inappropriate touch a few times within the last week or so, but on Tuesday, January 24, I was especially aware of it because it came in a moment when there was plenty of space around where I stood to walk past without touching. When it happened, I felt very uncomfortable but I didn’t want to jump to conclusions, so I decided to be extra vigilant about it and take special note of what Student A was doing the next day.

During class, the students read a story and most students looked down intently at their books. Student A, however, was always looking around to see where I was. When I would walk past his chair, he would scoot his chair out and lean back his elbow. I successfully maneuvered around him so that he didn’t touch me, but I was definitely aware that he tried. He tried this maneuver a few times throughout the class period. At the very end of class, I stood by a desk and spoke to a student. I noticed Student A walked over to the side of the classroom towards the class library and then went behind me to go to the door to leave the classroom. Although there was probably 5+ feet between my back and the wall, I felt him brush my butt as he left and I immediately felt uncomfortable about the situation. This is when I decided to contact administration and talk to them about the issue.

The End

Now I can laugh about it. But in the moment I was definitely freaked out. Honestly, this student is a good kid, but I hope his parents take this behavior seriously and get him some counseling.

Also, never thought I'd have to deal with this in my job, but I guess you've got to be ready for anything when you're a teacher.
